Spider-Man will be returning to the Marvel universe following the conclusion of the deal between the massive comic book enterprise and Sony Pictures Entertainment, which holds the film rights to the superhero character, according to a report from Marvel.com.
According to the agreement between the two studios, Sony will still possess the rights to distribute the film as well as keep hold of the creative and financial direction over the new version of the well-loved franchise.
"Spider-Man is one of Marvel's great characters, beloved around the world. We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building," disclosed the CEO of Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger.
Meanwhile, Michael Lynton, the CEO and chairman of Sony, shared that the company have always aimed to "collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers" to expand their franchises and develop their characters. He also identified Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal as the main players who worked with Marvel to "help orchestrate this deal." Lynton shared that the three comprised a "perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man."
"This [the deal] is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans," Lynton remarked.
Doug Belgrad, the president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, revealed that the Marvel and the company he is heading share a "long, successful history of working together." He explained that the latest collaboration of the two giants will be the "perfect way" to develop Peter Parker's story. Belgrad also noted that this move will pave the way for future plans regarding the superhero.
Feige, who is the president of Marvel Studios, also joined in the group of executives expressing their excitement over the agreement. He shared his enthusiasm on working with Pascal, who was "deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world's most beloved characters," to produce the upcoming Spider-Man film.
"Marvel's involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years," he shared with the audience.
The Marvel version of the Spider-Man film is scheduled for release on July 28, 2017.
