Criminal Abortionist in Georgia Caught and Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison

Charles Rossman, a criminal abortionist from Georgia, pled guilty this morning, by which he was sentenced to 5 years in prison, 5 years on probation, and fined $3,500.

Rossman's crime occurred in 2003, when a 23-year-old woman came to his clinic for an abortion 30 weeks pregnant. In the state of Georgia, carrying out an abortion that late into pregnancy is considered a crime. Additionally, the way in which he carried out the "abortion" was even more shocking to officials. He gave the woman some abortion pills and left, locking the door behind him, and left the woman alone in the middle of labor. The woman and her baby boy was helped by police and taken to the hospital through a 911 call.

Police found that Rossman had also committed other multiple illegal abortions. The Georgia State Board of Medical Examiners suspended his medical license, declaring that he was a "threat to the public health, safety, and welfare."

Rossman fled the country soon after and hid as a fugitive in Europe for eleven years until he was caught in Germany last year. He was immediately taken back to the U.S. and arrived in Georgia on January 10 and had been held without bond in Lowdnes County.

Operation Rescue, a pro-life Christian activist organization, had been closely following this case. Troy Newman, the President of Operation Rescue, was one who had been following this case since 2003.

"This is a victory for justice, for the women Rossman preyed upon, and for the innocent babies whose deaths from which Rossman profited," Newman declared.

He further added, "We just have to wonder how many others like Rossman are still out there victimizing women who haven't been caught. Based on our research into the abortion cartel, the answer is likely more than we can guess."
