You're so used to seeing Liam Neeson as a kick-ass former government operative and overprotective father in the Taken movie franchise that it will be difficult to imagine playing any other role than that. But Neeson's latest movie from Warner Bros. Pictures, Run All Night, does not fall far from the Taken franchise.
In this new thriller, Neeson plays Jimmy Conlon, a well-known Brooklyn mobster and hit man who was so good at what he does that he was given the moniker "The Gravedigger." His days of glory are all behind him, however, and now he chooses to live his days drunk with whiskey, comingsoon.net shared.
Things all changed for Jimmy when his estranged son Mike (played by Joel Kinnaman) becomes the target of his former best friend and mob boss Shawn Maguire (played by Ed Harris). Jimmy tries to reason with Shawn and spare his son's life, but the mob boss was relentless since Jimmy killed his own son in order to save Mike.
"I'm the only one who ever cared about you. But all that ended an hour ago when you killed my son," Shawn tells Jimmy.
"I pulled the trigger, I killed him. I had to. He was going to shoot Michael," explained Jimmy. "I'm here asking for my son's life, Shawn. He's a good kid. He's got a family. He doesn't deserve this."
But the damage has already been done and there's no talking the unforgiving mob boss out of anything.
"This has to end. I'm coming after your boy with everything I've got. And once it's done and it will be done, then I'll let you die," Shawn tells Jimmy in the trailer.
Jimmy is then forced to return back to his life of crime in order to protect Mike and his family. "Right now we're the most wanted men in the city. I know how this works. They're going to start pulling your life apart. The cops have got the wrong motivation. You've got to worry about staying alive. I'm the best chance you've got. Listen to your father for one night," Jimmy pleads with Mike.
Despite their rocky relationship, the two are forced to work together and rely on each other in order to survive the night.
Fans will be thrilled to find Neeson playing another tough and serious character - one who can cause some serious damage and make his enemies beg for mercy once he sets his mind to it.
Run All Night will hit theatres on April 17.
