The new adventure thriller Everest will be bringing two of the hottest stars in Hollywood together - Jake Gyllenhaal and Keira Knightley.
As the title suggests, the movie will take place in Mt. Everest, and is based on the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster and non-fiction novel Into Thin Air written by Jon Krakauer, where several mountain climbers died, Stack reported.
It is about the story of two expedition groups led by Scott Fischer (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) and legendary mountain climber Rob Hall (played by Jason Clarke).
The two groups attempt to climb the mountain but an unfortunate blizzard suddenly hits, forcing the climbers into a compromising situation. Over 200 people have already lost their lives attempting to climb Mt. Everest, and the 1996 incident saw one group triumph while the other encountered tragedy.
The film used information provided by survivors of the catastrophe in order to give a more honest account of the film.
Other big names starring in the film include James Brolin (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), Emily Watson (The Theory of Everything), and Sam Worthington (Avatar).
The film was directed by Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur, whose most recent work includes the 2013 Denzel Washington-Mark Wahlberg action comedy 2 Guns.
The screenplay was written by William Nicholson (Unbroken) and Justin Isbell, who is making his feature film screenwriting debut.
Other writers credited are Simon Beaufoy (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), Lem Dobbs (The Company You Keep) and Mark Medoff (Children of a Lesser God).
During filming, the crew even encountered a deadly avalanche, which claimed the lives of 12 Nepalese guides and injured several others.
The crew remained safe from its position at base camp while the deadly avalanche swept down a climbing route on the Nepalese mountain, Variety shared.
There are nine members of the second-unit crew, which consists of professional hikers and cameramen. "We just got word that everyone is fine," Tyler Thompson, a co-founder of Cross Creek, told Variety, "and we are looking to set up some kind of donation to help out some of the affected (Nepalese) families."
Universal Pictures will release Everest, which will premiere in 2D, 3D and 3D IMAX September 18.
In other news, Gyllenhaal was reportedly chosen to play the role of Rick Flag in Suicide Squad, which already boasts of an all-star cast, but he turned the role down. He would be appearing in other movies such as Southpaw and Demolition.
