Fans and followers of the hit big screen franchise Tomb Raider, which catapulted the career of famed actress Angelina Jolie when her role as Lara Croft cemented her ability to become an internationally recognized Hollywood leading woman, will be thrilled to know that a reboot is currently in the works, according to Deadline.
Two studio giants, Warner Bros and MGM, will be co-producing and co-financing the upcoming reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise. Meanwhile, the distribution of the said movie will be handled by Warner Bros. Another indicator that the project now received a green light is the announcement of the writer behind the said reboot. The script will be created by none other than Evan Daugherty.
Apart from the Tomb Raider reboot, Daugherty is also announced to handle the screenplay for the third installment of the G.I. Joe franchise. His previous works include writing the scripts for several blockbuster films including the reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the film franchise of Divergent in 2014 as well as the highly controversial movie, Snow White and the Huntsman in 2012.
Graham King, the Oscar winning producer for The Departed in 2006 as well as the man behind various successful films such as Hugo, The Aviator, In the Land of Blood and Honey, and Blood Diamond, shared his excitement over the project.
"I'm really excited about it, it's something that's much different than I've done before," the producer said. "It's a fun reboot, taking Lara Croft back to her roots, when she was growing up, becoming Lara Croft. It was done so successfully with Batman, and 'Planet of the Apes' this year...so I think if we can be clever and smart about it, it could be good," he added.
The first version of Tomb Raider was released in 2001, which starred the Maleficent actress Jolie. To date, this franchise has been recognized as the second most successful adaptation of a video game falling behind Prince of Persia. This 2001 film reached a gross income of US$274,703,340 worldwide.
Although the film was a success, Jolie was mocked by some movie critics due to her supposed poor acting skills. Meanwhile, the sequel released in 2003, titled Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, showed weaker performance in the box office but was deemed an improvement by the critics.
