Davis Cup 2015 Draws & Schedule: Andy Murray Opens Up About Representing Britain

Olympic gold medalist and former US Open and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray explained his commitment in representing Britain in the 2015 Davis Cup games.

The 27-year-old athlete, who is set to face off against the US team in this week's Davis Cup event, was recently questioned regarding his reasons for playing for Britain due to his comments regarding Scottish independence.

Murray, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, has represented tennis teams from Great Britain since he was 12 years old.

However, in September of last year, the professional tennis player took to Twitter to express his support for Scotland moving away from United Kingdom's rule and becoming an independent sovereign state, the Telegraph reported.

"Huge day for Scotland today!" Murray tweeted. "No campaign negativity last few days totally swayed my view on it. Excited to see the outcome. Let's do this!"

Although he supports the campaign, Murray said he was not able to vote for Scotland's separation from the United Kingdom since he currently resides in London, England.

Since the controversial tweet, Murray has been questioned regarding his commitment in playing for the British team in the Davis Cup.

The athlete explained that although he supports the "Yes" campaign for Scottish independence, he has nothing against Great Britain.

"I don't think any differently about Great Britain after what has happened," he said according to the Associated Press. "The whole notion that I don't like English people is nonsense."

Murray also feels confident that tennis fans from Great Britain will not withdraw their support for the Davis Cup team simply because of his tweet last year.

"If it's packed I'm sure that they'll make a lot of noise and get right behind the team," he said about the fans according to Express.

"This is a big tie, the biggest home tie I have played," he added. "Because the tickets sold out quickly, it shows that there is a passion here for the sport."
