Chris Johnson, the former running back for the New York Jets, suffered a gunshot wound in the shoulder during a drive-by shooting in Orlando on Sunday. One of Johnson's companions was killed during the incident, Reuters reported.
According to a report by the Orange County Sherriff's Department, the shooting occurred at around 4 a.m. at a traffic stop near Orlando's Florida Mall. At that time, Johnson was inside a jeep along with two other men. A car then pulled up next to their vehicle and opened fire.
The driver of the jeep, 28-year-old Dreekius Oricko Johnson, died immediately after the assailants fired at their vehicle. The other passenger, Reggie Johnson, survived after suffering multiple gunshot wounds to the leg, hand and shoulder. Despite having the same last name, police officials did not confirm if the three men are related.
Shortly after the incident, authorities responded to the scene and found the two survivors, Reggie and Chris Johnson, on the sidewalk near the vehicle. Dreekius Johnson's body was found in the driver's seat.
The two were immediately rushed to the hospital. Officials reported that their conditions have stabilized and they are expected to make a full recovery, according to Time.
Law enforcers are currently investigating the matter but no arrest warrants have been issued yet. The local police department also declined to publicly release information regarding the suspects.
Johnson, who was born in Florida, was in Orlando during the weekend to visit his hometown. In January of this year, while he was in Orlando, he was arrested over gun-related charges.
Johnson began his NFL career by playing with the Tennessee Titans from 2008 to 2013. He joined the New York Jets as the team's running back for the 2014 NFL season.
However, he recently became a free agent after the Jets declined to acknowledge his contract's option for the 2015 NFL season, Sports Illustrated reported.
