Sam Simon, the co-creator of the widely acclaimed animated television show, The Simpsons, as well as a world renowned philanthropist passed away on Sunday following a long battle with colorectal cancer, according to Rolling Stone. His representatives disclosed that the nine-time Emmy winner succumbed to the illness in his home in Pacific Palisades, California. Simon was 59.

Prior to engaging into charitable activities, Simon was a major player in the television industry as he became one of the most sought after writers of his time. His massive success in this field was marked by numerous successful episodes in television programs such as Cheers, Taxi, and It's Garry Shandling's Show. The later portion of 2012 brought forth a dreadful news that shocked Simon's fans, followers, and loved ones as the famed writer was diagnosed to be suffering from terminal cancer. His death was announced by his friend and agent, Andy Patman.

One of the most remarkable works of Simon in the television industry is the creation of the animated sitcom, The Simpsons, in 1989. As one of the founding members of the team, the late writer had been constantly cited as the inspiration behind the unique characters and plots of the series. In addition, the show's executives never fail to attribute the tone and style used in the episodes to the distinct sense of humor and wit of Simon.

"I'm here to tell you, the real creative force behind 'The Simpsons' was Sam Simon. The tone, the storytelling, the level of humor - that was all developed on Sam's watch," shared Ken Levine, one of the writers of The Simpsons.

Hence, the news of his demise deeply affected those connected with the animated series.

Al Jean, the executive producer of The Simpsons, took to social media his grief over the passing of such an icon. "Just heard terrible news of death of [Simon]. A great man; I owe him everything. If you would like to honor Sam's memory, do something nice for the next animal you meet. An enormous loss," he posted in his Twitter account following the announcement of the writer's death.

However, Simon did not confine himself within the realms of the television industry. Instead, he devoted most of his time and money to charity. As an outspoken animal rights activist, Simon donated heavily on various charitable organizations dedicated to such cause including PETA and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. His own organization, the Sam Simon Foundation, rescued dogs, provided traveling funds for animals in need of surgery, and gave out vegan meals to people.
