Sony's hilarious new movie Pixels starring Adam Sandler will surely take audiences to a trip down memory lane since beloved video game characters from the 80s will be used by aliens to destroy the earth.

The movie's first trailer started with a rocket ship launch and they explained, "In 1982, NASA sent a time capsule into space in hopes of contacting other life forms. Included were examples of our life and culture. It was intended to be a message of peace. Unfortunately, it was taken the wrong way."

The extraterrestrials actually thought that humans sent the capsule as a declaration of war, and now they have unleashed the same things found in the capsule to destroy earth - Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Donkey Kong!

The Pixels movie is directed by Chris Columbus and also stars Kevin James as President William Cooper. He enlists the help of his childhood friend Sam Brenner (Sandler), an 80s game champion, to help battle the invading forces.

Other cast members include Game of Thrones actors Peter Dinklage and Sean Bean, Source Code actress Michelle Monaghan, and Josh Gad, the guy who voiced Olaf in Disney's animated film Frozen, among many others.

The story came from Patrick Jean, and Timothy Dowling and Tim Herlihy both wrote the screenplay.

Pixels actually presents a clever and humorous spin on the classic alien invasion story, and it will be pretty cool for the people who grew up playing those video games see their beloved characters wreak havoc in this world.

The trailer was more than enough for a few good laughs, especially with Sandler's character looking outside his car and declaring, "Pac-Man's a bad guy!"

When the president faces Donkey Kong and he starts throwing barrels, James' character asks, "It's just a barrel, how bad could it hurt?" But they apparently underestimated the barrels since they are no match against it.

The group then decides that the only way to beat Pac-Man is with ghosts, just like in the video game. So the crew presents "ghosts" in the form of colourful cars, one of which is driven by the character of Dinklage.

"We're the only ones who can do this!" proclaims Brenner, but he quickly retracts his statement in a different scene: "I'm kidding; we're all gonna die! Sorry."

One of the funniest scenes in the trailer is with Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani. He tries to reason with his creation to stop destroying the world and it even seemed like his planned work. That is, until Pac-Man bites his hand.

Pixels will be released in theatres on July 24, 2015.
