Luxury watch maker Tag Heuer is preparing to make an impact in the consumer tech industry by unveiling its very own smartwatch.
The Switzerland-based company will not be alone in its endeavor as it has partnered with tech giants Google and Intel for its latest high-tech product, according to Phone Arena.
Details about the smartwatch will be unveiled by Tag Heuer along with its partners tomorrow. According to Jean-Claude Biver, the company's chief executive, the Tag Heuer smartwatch will serve as the digital version of the company's classic Carrera line of timepieces.
The executive noted that the company's smartwatch will look and feel like its traditional counterpart.
"People will have the impression that they are wearing a normal watch," Biver told Reuters.
Tag Heuer's entry in the smartwatch sector means the company will directly go against Apple, which is scheduled to unveil its own smart timepiece on April 24.
But for Biver, Tag Heuer's edge over the upcoming Apple Watch will be its design. Given the Apple Watch's trendy appearance, the Cupertino-based company will most likely attract a young consumer base. As for Tag Heuer, the company aims to produce a smart device with the appeal of classic watches.
"Apple will get young people used to wearing a watch and later maybe they will want to buy themselves a real watch," the executive said.
As to what consumers can expect regarding the specs of the company's smartwatch, there are no details yet regarding its technical features. But given Tag Heuer's tech partners, Intel and Google will most probably work on the device's software aspect.
However, it is not yet confirmed if Intel will use its processors to power the smartwatch or if Google will turn to the Android Wear as the operating system of Tag Heuer's wearable device.
As for its price, Pocket Now speculated that the company's smartwatch will probably have a higher retail price compared to the current Carrera models, which costs around $5,000.
