Marvel's X-Men Mystique played by actress Jennifer Lawrence is set to leave the X-Men First Class movie trilogy. Lawrence broke the news to MTV at the premiere of her latest movie, Serena on Saturday, March 21.
"It is my last one, actually," said Lawrence.
X-Men is a series of films based on Marvel Comic's superhero characters. The First Class trilogy includes The Last Stand, Days of Future Past and Apocalypse.
Mystique is the ginger haired, blue-skinned female mutant who has the ability to morph into anyone. She is the object of affection of both the protagonist Professor Charles Xavier and the antagonist Magneto. She changes sides from being on Professor Xavier's X-Men to being on Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants throughout the trilogy.
In an interview with Collider, X-Men writer and producer Simon Kinberg commented on Mystique's role in the film. "Part of what's really interesting about Mystique's character is that she is, in some ways, the child of both Erik and Charles," Kinberg said. "She grew up with Charles and then she sort of became a woman with Erik, so her being the cross-pollination, if you will, of those two philosophies and those two men is something we can explore in the movie too."
"I will say that [X-Men: Apocalypse] is definitely the close of a trilogy for those First Class characters, which isn't to say we won't see them in future movies, hopefully we will, but it's a completion of an arc for them."
Kinberg added that the characters in the film have fascinating relationships and that the third movie explores these relationships more in depth.
"The relationship between Beast and Mystique is a really interesting one that we didn't have a lot of time to explore in Days of Future Past, so we'll have an opportunity to do more of that in Apocalypse."
X-Men: Apocalypse, hits theaters on May 27, 2016.
