Good news for Guardians of the Galaxy fans: Director James Gunn has just revealed that the storyline treatment for the movie's sequel is now complete.
Gunn has been one busy guy, according to Screen Rant, since his script for The Belco Experiment has just been picked up by MGM and will begin shooting this June. He is also producing the project all the while developing Guardians and the Galaxy 2 for Marvel Studios.
After submitting his pitch for the much-awaited sequel, Gunn was pleased that the studio loved it, albeit calling it a huge "risk." In fact, he described it as the "best experience he ever had with a pitch."
Gunn has a scheduled follow-up meeting with the studio's executives and executive producers Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Jonathan Schwartz, and Victoria Alonso, and they will begin writing the actual screenplay a few days after that.
"I turned in my treatment. I'm going in to meet about it Friday and we will start working on the screenplay next week," Gunn said, adding that the script is "very, very far along."
Gunn shared certain details about the storyline, saying that the hardest part of Guardians of the Galaxy was setting up and designing the characters, so now that all of them have been realized, it is easier to breathe life into the core characters.
While writing Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2, Gunn had to plot out the whole story first before writing it after. But the script isn't followed religiously, since the cast and crew sometimes improvises - when the actors tweak certain things during rehearsals, sometimes Gunn would like it so much that he decides to add it to the script.
The director even said that the sequel will give audiences the opportunity to connect with the Guardians in a "deeper way" and fans will realize that the anti-heroes are "worse than you think."
He added that the movie adaptation won't be loyal to the comic books. "Ronan is a bad guy, we killed him. Not everything is going to happen in the movies the same as the comics," he said.
Moreover, Gunn is trying to figure out now how to get actress Karen Gillan to play Nebula in the sequel without having to shave her head.
He also teased that his favourite character will be in the sequel, and he is really hoping that it will be played by Al Pacino.
