The Muppets is set to invade the small screen once again, with The Big Bang Theory co-creator Bill Prady co-penning the script for a pilot presentation for the ABC network, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The new Muppet variety show is expected to be somewhat similar to the classic The Muppet Show, which aired back in 1970 and the newer ABC program Muppets Tonight, which aired in the late 90s.
Getting Prady to co-write the script is a stroke of genius since he already has past experience with the Muppets. He actually wrote for Fraggle Rock and The Jim Henson Hour back in the 1980s, before he wrote the script for the popular Muppet 3D film that is currently being shown in several Disney theme parks.
Outside of The Muppets, Prady also lent his genius to shows such as Dharma & Greg as well as Gilmore Girls. Prady actually considers the revival of the Muppets as a revival of his roots as well. It will be the second time Prady tries to pitch The Muppets for a show, since he already shot some test footage for Disney before starting work on The Big Bang Theory. However, Disney passed up on the opportunity.
Prady has even gained recognition for his work on the Muppets - he actually earned an Emmy nomination in 1991 for writing the tribute The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson in 1990.
Accordingly, other people working on the new Muppets series include executive producer Randall Einhorn and showrunner Bob Kushell, who is a writer-slash-producer who has worked on TV series such as 3rd Rock from the Sun, Malcolm in the Middle, Samantha Who, and Anger Manager.
It will be Kushell who will be co-writing the pilot script with Prady, and they will feature the regular cast of characters created by Henson - Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and Animal, among many others.
Nothing is guaranteed unless the show's star Miss Piggy signs on, but her love life is currently "on the rocks" with Kermit. The show does have plans to call on two celebrity cameos and introduce new roles, such as Fozzie's girlfriend and her parents.
Should ABC approve of Prady and Kushell's pilot script, Prady would have to juggle his new work with the Muppets together with The Big Bang Theory, since he is executive producer of the show.
