Another star joins the cast of the upcoming "Star Trek 3' movie as Algerian actress Sofia Boutella has been set to play a mystery role. Widely known for her appearance in Matthew Vaughn's "Kingsman: The Secret Service' as assassin Gazelle, Boutella has now joined the "Star Trek' film franchise to portray a character whose details have not yet been revealed.
Last month, "Pacific Rim' actor Idris Elba made the headlines as he is reportedly in talks to take on a villain role for "Star Trek 3.' He will be joining the other cast members who will reprise their roles for the upcoming sequel; these include Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana as the crew members of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
The original Captain Kirk, portrayed by William Shatner, will reportedly make a cameo in the new film; however, it remains unconfirmed whether he will be retained for the new iteration.
Taking on directorial duties for the last two films, J.J. Abrams will also be returning to produce the third movie in the rebooted sci-fi franchise. Justin Lin, who took the director's chair for four of the "The Fast and the Furious' films, has been set to direct "Star Trek 3' based on a script written by Pegg and Doug Jung.
According to Paramount Pictures, the sequel will hit theaters on July 8, 2016, two months before the 50th Anniversary of the "Star Trek' TV series. "The Man Trap', in which the Enterprise crew members came across a shape-shifting salt vampire, paved the way to a successful "Star Trek' on September 8, 1966.
With a contemporary reboot, Pegg made an official announcement that the script is a "completely" new one. The screenwriter also mentioned that working with co-writer Jung and director Lin has become a creative and interesting process. He also associated the "Fast and Furious' director with impressive choreographic capabilities.
In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Pegg shared his plans of incorporating "Apollo-era optimism' into the upcoming film, which will be the first new movie in the space saga following the death of actor Leonard Nimoy, who originally portrayed Spock.
"I think we just want to take it forward with the spirit of the TV show," Pegg explained. "And it's a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that's where we want to take it, you know."
