Wonder Woman Director Steps Out Because of 'Creative Differences' with Studio

Wonder Woman

The movie Wonder Woman just hit a snag, and it is all because of the "creative differences" between Warner Bros Studios and director Michelle MacLaren.

In an exclusive report by The Hollywood Reporter, it was revealed that MacLaren has decided to step down from directorial duties and now the studio is scrambling to find a replacement for her.

"Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together," the studio said in a statement.

In fact, MacLaren is not the first female director to suffer from "creative differences" with a studio, since back in 2011, Marvel Cinematic Studio and director Patty Jenkins split up after failing to come to terms with the second Thor movie.

Had it pushed through, Jenkins would have been the first female to direct a Marvel movie. But she and the studio have failed to make things work so the second Thor movie, which has been named Thor: The Dark World. Directorial duties have been passed on from Jenkins to Alan Taylor.

These two women's "creative differences" with the studio raises the question whether or not the movie-making industry, particularly those in the production of superhero movies are actually anti-feminist. But since neither the directors nor the studios have offered any extra details about their differences, that information remains unknown.

MacLaren actually has a lot of experience as a TV showrunner and director, and her foray with Wonder Woman would have made her big-screen directorial debut. She has worked on a pretty diverse list of television series, including Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Better Call Saul.

She was hired by Warner Bros back in November after the studio wanted a female director attached to Wonder Woman. Meanwhile, the lead role has been given to former Miss Israel contestant Gal Gadot, who has been subjected to a lot of criticisms for being "too skinny" for the role.

There have already been a lot of Wonder Woman movies in the past, and Warner Bros Studios wanted to create something more impressive. MacLaren has been reportedly involved in the shaping up of the script, so it remains to be seen how her departure would affect the movie.

At the same time, it is unsure whether finding MacLaren's replacement would affect the movie's release date which has been scheduled for 2017.
