The original Guardians of the Galaxy movie was such a surprise hit that director James Gunn sure has a lot to deliver for the sequel, but he seems pretty confident that fans will love it just as much as the original, if not more, and he is already revealing some teasers about it.
"Listen, I'm still excited about Star-Lord's character and where he goes. At its heart, Guardians is a story about families, and if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it's exciting to go there," he told Vulture in an interview.
It can be remembered that Star-Lord, also known as Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) had a sentimental attachment to a cassette tape that was given by his mother, and he loves listening to its music again and again. He even shared it to Gamora, who is played by Zoe Saldana.
Right before the original Guardians of the Galaxy was shown, Gunn had a pretty clear idea about its direction, and had already come up with the perfect continuation to the stories of Star-Lord, Gamora, and their good friends Drax the Destroyer (Dave Batista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and his lovable sidekick Groot (Vin Diesel).
"I knew for a long time what the story of the second one was gonna be," he said, before quickly adding, "And the third one!"
Quill won't be the only one dealing with daddy issues in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, since Gamora's sister Nebula, played by Karen Gillan, will be one of the original villains returning for the sequel, and she happens to have emotional struggles with her adoptive father Thanos, played by Josh Brolin.
Drax also painfully recalls being a father, and that is why he is pretty bitter and vengeful towards the Mad Titan, since he is the boss of the recently deceased alien Ronan, who murdered his family.
As for Quill, he dealt with the loss of his mother in the original movie, so his feelings towards his father will be explored in the sequel. Gunn revealed that it will be all about Quill's "relationship to that character." The director has even teased that his favourite Guardians character will be shown in the sequel, so will it be Star-Lord's father? And will that favourite character be played by Al Pacino?
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will hit theatres on May 5, 2017.
