Waiting for the announcement on who will be sent home among the top seven contestants in American Idol Season XIV appeared to not be the only source of thrill and excitement among the viewers of the show this week. In a report from Cartermatt.com, it was revealed that one of the Idol hopefuls, the ever fashionably eccentric Quentin Alexander, got into a tension filled argument with one of the judges, Harry Connick, Jr.
Following his performance of Are You Gonna Go My Way by Lenny Kravitz, which was lauded by both the fans and the judges, Alexander appeared tense and somewhat despondent on stage. When asked by American Idol host Ryan Seacrest about his current emotional state, the Idol hopeful replied with "this [the situation] sucks."
"We've got two of the best vocalists, my best friend, sitting over there," Alexander said, remarking on Joey Cook and Rayvon Owen being at the bottom two. "This whole thing is wack, but I'm going to shut up right now," he commented.
This remark caught not only the judges but also the audience off-guard, prompting Connick, Jr. to call Alexander's attention, according to People. The Idol judge confronted the contestant, asking what he meant by the offensive comment. While Seacrest tried his best to diffuse the tension, the two parties involved appeared to be perfectly determined to face each other.
"Quentin, if it's that wack, then you can always go home," Connick, Jr. said in response to the Idol hopeful's remark. "Idol is paying a lot of money to give you this experience and for you to say that to this hand that is feeding you right now, I think is highly disrespectful," the judge continued.
Not one to take things lying down, Alexander went back on stage to explain his side to the judge. He elucidated that his comment merely reflected his "personal feelings." He added, "It sucks to see two people who I've grown to love go home. That's what I mean is wack. I'm not disrespecting this competition."
After this confrontation, Seacrest once again attempted to veer the situation away from the issue and urged the contestants to rally for votes. However, Jennifer Lopez felt that she also needed to give her opinion regarding the matter after Alexander's second performance of the night.
"I feel that you're in a little bit of a sensitive mood. I understand that this is a lot of pressure. That is part of being an artist," she said, acknowledging the emotional attachment of Alexander to his fellow contestants and the stress brought about by the competition. "We have to get out in front of people. We have to control our emotions," she advised the Idol hopeful.
Lopez went on to say that she believes Alexander has "a good heart." However, she pointed out that he "displayed something earlier that kind of threw everybody." She added, "It was against what I know of you and I just want to say all of that you need to be an artist, you do but you also know how to control it and always put your heart out there first."
