Unbox Therapy, the online program that reviews consumer tech products, recently released a video to test the scratch-resistant features of the Apple Watch Sport's screen display.
This model, which is Apple's entry-level smartwatch priced at $349, is equipped with the Ion-X glass instead of the sapphire display cover, which can be found in the high-end versions of the Apple Watch, according to Mac Rumors.
In the video, host Lewis Hilsenteger of Unbox Therapy said the Ion-X can be compared to the Gorilla Glass, the protective cover used by Apple in most of its products. He explained that the Ion-X got its name due to the molecular process involved in manufacturing it.
For the test, Hilsenteger turned to various items to see if the Apple Watch Sport's display cover is really scratch-proof. The first set of items, which include a standard key, a knife and a steel wool, did not make a single scratch on the surface of the cover.
But after using two different types of sandpapers, the Ion-X glass became blurry due to the scratch marks.
Hilsenteger then noted that as shown in a previous video, the sapphire glass remained smooth even after it was subjected to the sandpaper test. This is why the more expensive Apple Watches, or those that range from $549 to $10,000, are equipped with the sapphire display cover.
Even though the Ion-X is not as tough as the sapphire glass, it was able to withstand everyday items such as the key, steel wool and a knife. After all, scraping the smart timepiece against these items is probably much more likely to happen than brushing it up against sandpaper with different grits.
The Apple Watch is set to be released on April 24. However, only those who pre-ordered the item beginning on April 10 will be able to get their hands on the latest product from Apple.
