Earth Day 2015: World Leaders Speak on Global Issues

Earth Day 2015 is not an isolated event designed for tree huggers and environmentalists. Hence, world leaders chose this day to speak on important issues concerning every person on the globe. It a worldwide event celebrated by over 192 countries. The United Nations and the President of the United States used the day to promote sustainable development, grassroots movements, and international treaties. The 45th annual International Earth Day is on Wednesday, April 22.

Economic growth comes at a high price. While nations in the world are striving to maintain or boost their economy, pollution levels are climbing. Pollution is a major issue in 2015. People are gathering together and marching against climate change. World leaders need to band together on signing international treaties on climate change.

"But the big decisions that lie ahead are not just for world leaders and policy-makers. Today, on Mother Earth Day, I ask each one of us to be mindful of the impacts our choices have on this planet, and what those impacts will mean for future generations," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

US President Barack Obama spoke at the Everglades National Park in Florida on Wednesday. According to the Sun Sentinel, Florida is at risk for damages to the water supply and natural habitats due to the possibility of shoreline erosion and rises in sea-level.
