During Sony's CinemaCon presentation last Wednesday in Las Vegas, the studio revealed some exciting news that created a loud buzz among fans of the "Spider-Man' franchise.
"LEGO' movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are working on an animated "Spider-Man' movie that will hit theaters on July 20, 2018. Although the duo will be writing and producing the project, they will not be joining the team as the film's directors.
In addition, the latest live-action film from Marvel and Sony has been set for a release on July 28, 2017.
Studio chairman Tom Rothman also presented other news and clips from its current slate and had put forward several high-status directors, such as Chris Columbus and Robert Zemeckis.
Sony also spent some time discussing the ways with which the studio aims to address the issues that it recently faced. These include the controversy relating to "The Interview' hack scandal as well as the ousting of Amy Pascal.
According to Rory Bruer, the company's worldwide distribution president, Sony seeks to realign its approach, starting with the hiring of Tom Rothman as the new chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment's Motion Picture Group.
"Tom's mission is to identify, develop and produce the next wave of iconic films for audiences worldwide," Bruer explained.
Sony also presented an extensive lineup that included never-before-seen clips from "The 5th Wave' (Chloe Grace Moretz, Liv Schreiber), 'Money Monster' (George Clooney, Julia Roberts), "Inferno' (Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones), "Concussion' (Will Smith, Alec Baldwin) and "Ricky and the Flash' (Meryl Streep).
Zemeckis, who took on directorial duties for 'The Walk', went onstage early on in the presentation to share to the audience that he "prefers to see movies on a really big screen."
Presenting a trailer for the drama film that stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the director also said that he has been developing the project for the past decade, stating: "I was really looking for a project that should be presented in a theatrical venue."
The CinemaCon presentation also showed Ang Lee being featured in a video message as she shared details about his movie 'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk', starring Kristen Stewart and Vin Diesel. According to the director, this will be the first ever movie to be filmed entirely in the high frame rate of 120 frames per second.
'Goosebumps' director Rob Letterman and producer Neal Moritz also presented the new project, expressing their hopes that it could be the start of a new franchise. Jack Black has signed on to the film to portray author R.L. Stine.
The presentation concluded with new clips from Eon and MGM's James Bond movie "Spectre', starring Daniel Craig.
