It looks like the future of Marvel's Spiderman reboot is slowly taking shape as news regarding the actor who might be playing the role of the young Peter Parker once again began to surface. While a shortlist had been reportedly leaked recently, one name appears to be a very strong contender for the part. Comic Book Movie revealed that Asa Butterfield, the lead actor in the popular sci-fi film Ender's Game, has the most potential in terms of landing the widely coveted role.
"Marvel had liked him [Butterfield] since day one", an unnamed insider revealed to Latino Review. In describing the possible actor to star in the Spiderman reboot, it was previously disclosed in the same publication that Marvel might choose a "new actor" who would be "probably (be) an unknown."
The insider revealed, "New actor, probably an unknown, he will be specifically based in High School and they (Marvel) want him to be able to grow up into the role." He then added that should the choice of actor to take on the superhero character work well with the audience, then the studio might consider turning the Spiderman reboot project into a series. "The thought being if this works, Spidey can do multiple trilogies for years ala Harry Potter," the source disclosed.
Butterfield has previously starred in various big screen and TV projects which include Nanny McPhee Returns, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and Son of Rambow. However, his breakthrough role was playing Hugo Cabret in the 2011 film titled Hugo. He then played the titular role for the 2013 sci-fi film Ender's Game where he took on the role of Ender Wiggin.
A multi-awarded English actor, Butterfield had been nominated for several awards including Best Actor for the British Independent Film Awards and Best Performance by a Younger Actor for the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA. He won the Rising Star Award in 2013 during the CinemaCon, USA and the Youth in Film Award during the Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards in 2011 for his film Hugo.
The standalone Spiderman reboot is scheduled to premiere on July 28, 2017.
