Experts Weigh In on the Apple Watch's Secret Port

Those who bought themselves an Apple Watch have been asking what the "secret port" on it was for. The port, which is covered by a small metal, according to sources, is rumored to be a hidden charging port.

The hidden slot caught the attention of the owners of the new wearable from Cupertino, as it is not included in the gadget's documentation.

The metal cover is said to be hiding a six-pin port that can be used for charging the Apple Watch much faster, according to a source. The new charging technology will be even faster compared to wireless charging.

According to smart accessories maker Reserve Strap, they have designed a strap for the Apple Watch, which packs a battery which will be connected to the six-pin port inside. This means owners of the watch can charge their wearable while on the go-- this is if they were right about their assumption of the secret port's function.

"We've developed and tested a completely rethought design that takes advantage of the 6 pin port underneath the band slide of the Apple Watch. This port hadn't been deciphered by anyone until now but we've been able to make significant enough observations so far to warrant shifting our development focus to this new method," the company announced on their official website on May 1.

The strap will fit both 4mm and 38mm case sizes, and will also be available in gray, white, and black, according to Reserve Strap.

Tech critics, however, are advising Apple Watch owners to stop in their tracks of purchasing an Apple Watch accessory for the hidden six-pin port, as Cupertino has yet to confirm the function for the hidden port.

It is understandable why accessory makers and Apple Watch owners are excited to explore the many capabilities of the new device as it is all the rage these days, but there is a good chance that they are not making a smart and informed decision.

According to 9to5 Mac, this is not the first time a company has launched a gadget that has a hidden port. Spending about $200 to $250 for something that might not work on the new Apple wearable can be such a waste of money.

The "secret port" was not designed for user access, experts claim. This was made obvious by the fact that it is covered by a small piece of metal that cannot be easily opened. Even the experts at tearing down devices at iFixit had a hard time trying to open the hidden port and had to resort to using an unconventional tool just to open it.

An inexperienced user trying to pry open this hidden port on his Apple Watch might find himself damaging it, which might make the wearable lose its warranty.
