BlackBerry Leap Specs & Price: BlackBerry Launches New Smartphone With 5-Inch Display

BlackBerry has unveiled its latest smartphone model with touchscreen features dubbed as the Leap.

The handset was first launched in India with a retail price of Rs 21,490 or around $335.

The BlackBerry Leap sports 5-inch display protected by Gorilla Glass 3. It screen has full-touch features and a 720p resolution. The device runs on the company's own BlackBerry OS 10.3.1 and is equipped with an 8-megapixel rear camera. On the other side, the smartphone has a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter.

For its processor, BalckBerry powered the Leap with the 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 chipset from Qualcomm. It also has the Adreno 225 GPU and comes with 2GB of RAM. The device's internal storage of 16GB can be expanded to 128GB using a microSD card.

The handset packs a 2800mAh battery which can last up to 25 hours on a single charge, according to the company.

Sunil Lalvani, BlackBerry India's managing director explained that the features of the BlackBerry Leap were designed to assist young professionals in their work.

"The BlackBerry Leap was designed specifically for the young power professionals who see their smartphone device as a powerful and durable productivity tool that also safeguards sensitive communications, while on-the-go," the executive said during the launch according to NDTV.

"With BlackBerry Leap complementing the latest BlackBerry portfolio, including BlackBerry Passport and BlackBerry Classic, we continue to provide products and services that meet the needs of our consumer and enterprise customers," Lalvani added.

Although it is not yet clear as to when the BlackBerry Leap will enter the U.S. market, the company confirmed that it is gearing up to release a high-end smartphone model in the country.

According to John Chen, the chief executive of BlackBerry, the upcoming device does not have a name yet, but the company is calling it as The Slide. The executive noted that the smartphone will feature a dual-curved display with touchscreen features.
