Game publisher Electronic Arts is building up the anticipation of gamers for the latest "Need for Speed" title with a new teaser image.
Based on the image revealed by the studio, many fans are speculating that the upcoming game could be "Need for Speed: Underground 3," IGN reported.
Although no official confirmation has been revealed yet, social media followers of "Need for Speed" commented that the upcoming title might focus on the third installment of the "Underground" series.
The first "Underground" game came out in 2003 and served as a full reboot of the entire "Need for Speed" franchise. It was the first game that offered a career mode storyline as well as a garage mode, which allowed players to customize and upgrade their vehicles.
In addition, unlike the main "Need for Speed" titles which focused on exotic luxury vehicles, "Need for Speed: Underground" featured import cars commonly associated with the street racing scene. Its sequel, "Need for Speed: Underground 2," was released in 2004.
Aside from being associated with the "Underground" series, the wheel of the car featured in Electronic Arts' teaser image sported the term Speedhunters.
This word refers to the international group of journalists, photographers and car enthusiasts who passionately follow the car culture scene under the banner of Electronic Arts.
If the teaser image is actually referring to the actual Speedhunters, then it could mean that this group will play a central role in the upcoming "Need for Speed" game.
Gamerant speculated that gamers might take on the role of a member of the Speedhunters as they infiltrate the underground world of street racing.
The upcoming title from the "Need for Speed" franchise has been in the works since May of 2014 after Marcus Nilsson, the general manager of Ghost Games confirmed that the development studio is handling the project.
Earlier this week, Electronic Arts announced through the game's Facebook page that the new "Need for Speed" title will be officially unveiled today.
