Sweden won the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) on Saturday, May 23 at Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna, Austria. Måns Zelmerlöw's "Heroes" placed first. There were 40 entries in the 60th annual event. ESC is an annual television song contest held amongst the members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
Zelmerlöw is a 28-year-old Swedish pop singer, model, actor, and television presenter. He is signed with Warner Music Sweden. "Heroes" is one of three highest scoring songs in the contest. It is the 6th time that Sweden won ESC. Russia's entry "A Million Voices" by Polina Gagarina placed second while Italy's "Grande amore" by Il Volo placed third. Austria is the first country to host the event and score no points. It is also the first time since 2003 that any country has scored zero points in the competition.
"Live your life like there is no tomorrow, son and tell the others to go sing it like a hummingbird, the greatest anthem ever heard: we are the heroes of our time," sang Zelmerlöw.
Sweden won with 365 points, Russia placed 2nd with 303 points, Italy placed 3rd with 292 points, Belgium placed 4th with 217 points, Australia placed 5th with 196 points, Latvia placed 6th with 186 points, Estonia placed 7th with 106 points, Norway placed 8th with 102 points, Israel placed 9th with 97 points, Serbia placed 10th with 53 points, Georgia placed 11th with 51 points, Azerbaijan placed 12th with 49 points, Montenegro placed 13th with 44 points, Slovenia placed 14th with 39 points, Romania placed 15th with 35 points, Armenia placed 16th with 34 points, Albania placed 17th with 34 points, Lithuania placed 18th with 30 points, Greece placed 19th with 23 points, Hungary placed 20th with 19 points, Spain placed 21st with 15 points, Cyprus placed 22nd with 11 points, Poland placed 23rd with 10 points, United Kingdom placed 24th with 5 points, France placed 25th with 4 points, Germany placed 26th with 0 points, and Austria placed 27th with 0 points.
ESC began in 1956. Invited countries submit a song to be performed on live TV and vote to determine the most popular song in the contest. Past winners of ESC are Celine Dion, Domenico Modugno, Julio Iglesias, Dana, and Bucks Fizz. Mirjam Weichselbraun, Alice Tumler, and Arabella Kiesbauer were the presenters of the event.
