During the recent Computex 2015 tech event, Nvidia unveiled its latest graphics processing unit designed for gaming dubbed as the GeForce GTX 980 Ti.
As the flagship successor of the GTX 980, the new GPU model will allow users to run games at 4K resolution settings with high frame rates, according to The Verge.
According to the company, the GTX 980 Ti is powered by Nvidia's Maxwell microarchitecture and packs 6GB of RAM. This is a significant boost from its predecessor's 4GB RAM capacity.
To test the new GPU, Nvidia subjected GTX 980 Ti in various benchmark tests by running it on games with 4K and maximum settings.
These included "The Witcher 3" at 45 frames per second and "Grand Theft Auto V" at 31.6 frames per second. "Battlefield 4" and "Shadow of Mordor" both clocked in over 30 frames per second at max settings.
The GTX 980 Ti will hit the market with a retail price of $649. Nvidia noted at this price, the new GPU will come bundled with the upcoming PC version of "Batman: Arkham Knight," CNET reported.
Aside from gaming, the company said its latest GPU model will also come handy for developers due to its DirectX12 support. Nvidia explained that the combination of these two will provide developers with a smoother graphics rendering experience.
With the release of the GTX 980 Ti, it seems Nvidia is trying to say that being able to run games at 4K resolution settings is the new norm for gaming. Although there are only a few 4k-capable monitors currently available in the market, Nvidia is trying to change this with its new Asus and Acer 4K monitors with G-Synch technology.
This feature utilizes processors inside monitors that can significantly reduce stuttering or lagging. The company said these new monitors will be released with high-end gaming laptops in the near future.
