Tom Holland has just taken over the role of Peter Parker's Spider-Man from actor Andrew Garfield, and his rapport and chemistry with Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans really helped seal the deal of this new role for him.
According to Cinema Blend, Holland was screen tested with both Downey and Evans before Marvel Studios finally gave him a contract to sign. Producer Amy Pascal and Marvel Studio President Kevin Feige first had Holland, together with other Spider-Man hopefuls Asa Butterfield, Judah Lewis, Matthew Lintz, Charlie Plummer, and Charlie Rowe read lines with Downey, who plays billionaire genius Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man.
It was a pretty smart idea to check the new Spider-Man's chemistry with those he will be working with in the future. And since the web-slinger would be making his debut in the film "Captain America: Civil War," which will be released on May 6, 2016, Marvel execs then got Evans, who plays Captain America as part of the casting process.
Evans' chemistry with Holland really sealed the deal for the actor, since Marvel execs had a tough time choosing between him and Charlie Rowe. Holland might have read lines with Evans, but Rowe unfortunately did not get the same opportunity.
Downey and Evans' involvement in Spider-Man's casting process speaks volumes on Marvel's plans for the friendly neighborhood superhero. There has actually been a rumor that the standalone Spider-Man film, which will be released on July 28, 2017 will be called "Spider-Man: The New Avenger," and will feature Downey in a supporting role. According to sources, Iron Man is in his movie checking if the teenage superhero has what it takes to be a part of the Avengers.
Spider-Man's role in "Captain America: Civil War" will be pretty minimal though, since Holland will only be in the set for a week, at the very most. They have already started filming for the movie in Atlanta, Georgia, and there have been reports that Steve Rogers, better known as Captain America will be the fourth person from the Marvel world who will be wielding Thor's hammer Mjolnir.
A fan snuck up on the set and saw that Captain America was holding up something that looked like a double-sided hammer. So far, only Thor, his father Odin, and the Vision have proven themselves worthy enough to carry the hammer, although there was a slight movement from the hammer when Captain America tried to carry it in a light scene from "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
