He might be the tiniest superhero the world has ever known, but Ant-Man actually plays quite the pivotal role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Marvel President Kevin Feige explains why.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Feige said that they are continuing to expand cinematic mythology and bring new characters, not just sequels. They want people to know that there is a big universe that is simply waiting to be explored, and there are lots of other things going on that they might not be aware as yet.
The "Ant-Man" movie will actually tie down a lot of other Marvel films, he said, and provide answers and create even more questions with regards to the connections Marvel characters and superheroes have with each other.
"There is the history from what we saw in the Captain America films, what we saw of Tony Stark's father, his past in some of the Iron Man films," he shared. "So, Hank Pym (played by Michael Douglas) can fit into that in an even more sort of logical way. It isn't just about getting bigger, but it's about getting clever and getting more unique. This movie gives that opportunity."
Feige said that the "Ant-Man" film takes place in the present day, and it was very important for them to make it right since Ant-Man will be a part of the upcoming Avengers films. In fact, he will be appearing in Chris Evans' standalone Captain America film called "Civil War."
"He and Wasp are on the cover of that first Avengers. We have - I don't know if they're around here, but in the offices of Disney we've got big blow-ups of Avengers No. 1. And I just love, you know, picking off the fact that each of those characters are finally coming to life, and two more will be hit in this movie," said Feige.
He is pretty excited for audiences to learn more of Pym's and Scott Lang's (Paul Rudd) characters. Lang, in particular, fell into a life of crime simply because he's good at it, but he struggles to do what is right and redeem himself from his past actions.
"To see that journey and hopefully root for him to get his act together, to get back together with his daughters... He's the first Marvel hero to have a family, to have a kid, which is also unique and also fun," he said.
