Fans of the Harry Potter series rejoiced when it was announced that there would be an upcoming play called "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," which would take place at the Palace Theatre on London's West End next year.

According to TIME, J.K. Rowling collaborated with English television writer Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany to create the project, which was first leaked back in December 2013. Back then, the official statement was that the play would "explore the previously untold story of Harry's early years as an orphan and outcast" with appearances from familiar book characters.

However, Rowling shared on her Twitter account that "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" is "NOT a prequel. Not. A. Prequel," she tweeted.

"It will tell a new story," Rowling wrote, but declined to share more details. "I don't want to say too much more, because I don't want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans."

Rowling will not write the script for "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child." She is co-producing the venture along with veteran theater producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender.

It was also on her Twitter account that Rowling explained why she allowed "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" to be told in a London play instead of a new book.

"To answer one inevitable (and reasonable!) question - why isn't #CursedChild a new novel? - I am confident that when audiences see the play they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story," she wrote.

Rowling wrote a total of seven Harry Potter books, but since the series ended several years ago, fans have refused to give up on the magical world created by Rowling and have asked for more stories concerning Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

However, Rowling has insisted that the trio's stories are a closed book. She has provided more insight to the world and characters she has created in Pottermore though, and just recently, she revealed why the Dursleys disliked the Potters so much.

Apparently, when Vernon and Petunia Dursley met James and Lily Potter for the first time, Vernon asked James what car he was driving, but since the wizarding world does not make use of cars, James instead described his broom in detail. When James began talking about Gringgots, Vernon thought that he was being mocked at and together with Petunia, he stormed out of the restaurant.
