Season nine of "The Big Bang Theory" will be very important for Dr. Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and his girlfriend Amy Farah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), who have encountered an impasse in their relationship.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Steve Molaro said that Sheldon cares a great deal for Amy, and now that she has decided to break up with him, they have an interesting albeit messy situation in their hands.
Not only will their group dynamic be affected, but Sheldon's possible marriage plans (he does have a ring, after all!) might be thrown into the curb. Even Molaro does not have an inkling what Sheldon is doing with that particular ring, or if he's even going to propose soon.
"I don't know how long he's had that. I have an idea but I'm not going to tell you!" he laughingly teased. "I don't know if the length of time matters so much as the situation where Amy has taken a legitimate step back that he was not expecting. That's really the headline here that we'll be digging into."
Molaro said that Sheldon and Amy have been dating for five years already, and it was definitely upsetting that Sheldon would even think about a television series while they were making out. He completely understands why Amy felt the need to take a break from Sheldon, even though this move terribly upset fans of the "Shamy" tandem.
"She can't even get through a make-out session without him thinking about television, so I understand her frustration. At the same time, I understand his side, which is: How much faster do you think I can go with this? It's an interesting place for them to be; it seems very real and I think it's exciting that we're shaking things up," he said.
Molaro added that even though Amy asked for a break, he does not think that the two geniuses are done speaking to each other. "He's so fond of her - something is going to happen between them, I'm sure," he guaranteed.
When season eight ended, Howard and Bernadette were unable to throw Stuart out of his mother's house, while Raj was unable to break up with his girlfriend Amy. Leonard and Amy finally took the plunge and went on a road trip to get married - but will they push through? During that ride, Leonard confessed that he kissed another girl while he went on a voyage several seasons back, and the news clearly upset Penny.
However, Molaro is pretty excited to find out how all of their relationships will unfold. "That's what we're excited to find out. It ripples through a lot of relationships and how they both handle this and what happens moving forward is what we're so excited to jump in on season nine with," he said.
