"The Hobbit' star Martin Freeman recently discussed his mystery character in Marvel's upcoming superhero sequel, "Captain America: Civil War."
Opening up about his "ambiguous" character in the third "Captain America' installment, Freeman told BadTaste.it, "He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes power I suppose. So you're not quite sure which side he's on."
The "Sherlock' star further explained why his role is characterized by uncertainties and why he prefers to keep it this way.
"It looks a little bit like he's playing one game when actually he's playing another. It's the kind of character I like because it's ambiguous and because you don't know whether he's good or bad," the actor shared. ""¦I think there's just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line."
As pointed out by ComicBookMovie, "credible rumours" have claimed that Freeman's character in "Captain America: Civil War' will be an interrogator and can also be expected to return in the "Black Panther' film alongside actor Chadwick Boseman, who will take on the titular character.
"This unconfirmed detail has led many to believe that the English actor is playing Everett Ross - an American Regent of Wakanda who worked as an adviser alongside government officials and the National Security Agency in the comics," the entertainment news website states.
Freeman previously said that he has signed on for a "small role" in "Captain America 3,' but dropped hints that he could return in future Marvel movies to reprise his role.
"I've done a few days shooting on the "Civil War' film," the 43-year-old actor said. "I have two more days to go, so it's a relatively small part. Unless they fire me, it's a role that will carry on."
Previously, it was suggested that Freeman might be portraying a character named Edward Chase, who will be introduced as the Prime Minister of England in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
His story is expected to start after the destruction that was brought on by Captain America's war with Crossbones, which is expected to bring on severe consequences, such as British soldier casualties.
If he is truly portraying the Prime Minister, Freeman's character will then be included in the side of those who will be putting pressure on Captain America's New Avengers to keep them in control.
However, all these speculations remain unofficial until announcements are made.
"From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared about Freeman's decision to join the Marvel universe. "We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
Freeman has signed on to a cast that is already filled with heroes and villains from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Aside from Chris Evans who will be coming back for the titular role, other stars to appear in the third "Captain America' installment include Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Frank Grillo, Daniel Bruhl, Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen.
"Captain America: Civil War' will make its way to cinemas on May 6, 2016.
