Sony announced that it has started rolling out the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 devices.
The company also mentioned through the Sony Mobile blog that owners of older models from its Xperia line can expect to receive the same update soon.
The Android 5.1 Lollipop update officially released by Sony on July 21 applies to the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Z2 Tablet.
However, Sony reminded that for some of these devices, particularly the tablet version of the Xperia Z2, the arrival of the update may vary depending on the location of the owners and their local network carriers.
As explained by the company, the latest Lollipop update for the Xperia devices has been tweaked to work with its own firmware, the Xperia UI. Because of this, the update features various enhancements designed for Sony's devices.
One of the update's additions includes new customization options. These allow users to have more control over the settings of their device's volume, alert and silent modes.
Also, through the latest Android Lollipop update, users will now be able to integrate and synchronize details about their LinkedIn contacts with the Calendar.
The update also comes with Sony's latest Xperia in Business feature. This allows users to manage their work-related tasks using their Sony smartphones or tablets in a more efficient manner.
Aside from its special Xperia Email, Contacts and Calendar apps, the Xperia in Business also features encryption methods and remote-wipe capabilities. These let users share and transfer information from one device to another in a safe and secure manner.
Users can also expect improved camera settings through the latest Lollipop update. With version 5.1, Sony was able to make the Super Auto Mode feature more accurate. Through this enhanced mode, users will be able to take clearer and richer pictures with their devices even in various lighting conditions.
Lastly, the Android 5.1 Lollipop update also comes with support for Sony's SmartWatch 3. Users will now be able to take selfies or snapshots of their surroundings using Sony's wearable device as the remote shutter button.
Since the roll out has already begun, owners of the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 devices can already expect to receive notifications regarding the update's availability. However, since it is most probably being conducted in stages by carriers, not everyone will be able to upgrade their devices' firmware at the same time.
As for owners of older models, such as the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia C3, Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua, the update for their devices are scheduled to be released within the next few weeks.
