Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier from the French film "The Artist' died in Los Angeles on Aug. 2015. Uggie, a white and beige dog was 13 years old. The talented terrier was the first dog to cement his paw prints in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in 2012.
"We regret to inform to all our friends, family and Uggie's fans that our beloved boy has passed away," wrote owner and trainer Omar von Muller in a Facebook post. "Thank you for your support, I will not be reading any comments for a while as it is too painful at the moment."
Uggie was famous for his role as "The Dog" in the 2011 silent film "The Artist,' a romantic dramedy about Hollywood's transition from silent film to sound in the late 1920s. Uggie starred alongside French actor Jean Dujardin. In one scene, Uggie saved Dujardin's character from a blazing fire by attracting the help of a police officer.
Muller revealed that Uggie had a cancerous prostate tumor. Uggie was put to sleep so that he would not have to suffer more pain. Muller thanked people for their support. The owners did not plan on talking about Uggie's death until more time had passed, but the news had already been leaked to TMZ.
"We were not planning on posting anything until we healed a little more but unfortunately somebody leaked it to TMZ and they will be announcing it," wrote Muller.
