Even "The Big Bang Theory" season 9 returns to the small screen, fans of the sitcom want to find out two things - firstly, has Leonard Hofstadter and Penny finally tied the knot, and secondly, just what is Sheldon Cooper's reason behind the ring? Is it to propose to his (ex) girlfriend Amy Farrah Fowler?
These mysteries have driven up the hype for the next season, but "The Big Bang Theory" showrunner Steve Molaro just dished out to TV Line the real deal behind the first question. Apparently, Leonard and Penny will officially tie the knot during the season 9 premiere, but he quickly and teasingly adds, " "that's really only the beginning of the story. As fun and as great as it is to see them get married, that's only part of it."
One big issue would probably the entrance of Leonard's other woman - the girl he kissed while he was on the North Sea expedition. Leonard only confessed this to Penny while they were driving towards Las Vegas, and the news visibly upset her, although she sounded determined to still push through with the wedding.
Molaro explained that it's high time Leonard and Penny exchange their "I do's" since they have endured several highs and lows to their relationship already.
"We're nine years in and we want to keep things moving forward, as well as exciting and scary and fun," he said. "And I think this a great way to do it. Penny has had commitment issues for years and years now, especially when it comes to Leonard, and even she feels, 'How much longer are we going to go back and forth on this? Let's just jump in and hope for the best.'"
As for Sheldon and Amy, they have not known each other as long as Leonard and Penny, but they have developed quite the relationship over the years. Some might call them odd or poke fun of their weird habits, but there is no mistaking the fun and chemistry the genius couple shares.
So when Amy decided to take a break from Sheldon last season, it really tore fans apart. During the season finale, Sheldon says goodbye to Amy via Skype, and he looks forlorn. He takes out a ring from his drawer, faces his Gollum figurine, and asks the fictional ring expert what he's supposed to do with it now.
A lot of people jumped to the conclusion that Sheldon is going to propose, and Molaro says fans will get their answer when "The Big Bang Theory" season 9 finally returns.
