A new leak on Twitter hinted that Nike may be preparing to unveil a new version of its Nike Mag shoes next month.
Footwear fans, of course, are aware that the Nike Mag pair is the replica of the self-lacing shoes that Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly wore in the 1989 film "Back to the Future II."
The new leak regarding the futuristic footwear was provided by Max Erdenberger, the former art director for the advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy. In the tweet, Erdenberger posted a photo of him holding the limited edition Nike Mag which came out in 2011. The image featured the caption "October 21, 2015," according to PSFK.
Although Erdenberger has not yet clarified the significance of this date, the photo of the Nike Mag and the ad agency's working relationship with Nike has led various sources speculating about the upcoming release of the new footwear model.
After all, it has been previously reported that Nike is preparing to release a new version of the Nike Mag sometime this year. Earlier in January, Time reported that Tinker Hatfield, the designer for Nike who crafted the shoes Fox sported in "Back to the Future 2," confirmed the development of the sneakers.
The designer, however, did not mention exactly when it will come out but 2015 marks the 30th anniversary of the film series, which began in 1985 with the release of the first "Back to the Future" movie.
Also, Time noted that the upcoming Nike Mag model will be a significant upgrade over its predecessor. The first model, which has light-up features, does not have self-lacing technology as the one showed in the classic film.
But for the new pair, Nike has reportedly patented a concept involving motorized rollers that will tighten up the footwear's laces once someone wears them. This feature has been dubbed as power laces, the term used by McFly in the film after being astonished by the footwear's self-lacing technology.
Hopefully, Nike will release a statement to address the new reports and leaks surrounding the next-generation model of the Nike Mag.
The Nike Mag first came out in 2011 and was priced at about $100, according to CNET. It was marketed as a limited edition model and only 1,500 pairs were sold through eBay. The proceeds from the special footwear were then donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to contribute in the research studies for Parkinson's disease.
