If there's one thing fans have learned during "The Big Bang Theory" season 9 premiere, it's that Amy has decided to break up with Sheldon for good after he relentlessly badgered her when she asked her for some time to think.
However, Mayim Bialik, the actress who plays Amy in the show assured ShAmy fans that they have nothing to worry about.
"This is not a breakup," she told Entertainment Weekly. "My mom kept asking me why all of her neighbors are asking if I'm kicked off the show. Amy needs space and the first episode explores how Sheldon deals with that notion."
According to her, scientific genius Sheldon figures that there's always a reasonable way to solve problems, even matters of the heart. He's "not happy when things don't go his way," Bialik points out. "This is really out of his control and that's definitely not comfortable for him."
Executive producer Steve Molaro further explains Sheldon's recent behavior, which only inflicted more damage on his relationship with Amy.
"He's hurt and confused," he said. "This is not a science problem that he can solve by thinking about it. He wants to resolve this and doesn't really know how to."
However, he cannot blame Amy as well for what she did during the season premiere. "They're very quirky birds and in some ways they're made for each other, but also it can be frustrating," Molaro said. "It's not just that it's slow, it's slow and he requires a lot of patience. You have to put up with a lot and there's craziness."
Sheldon might have marriage on his mind especially now that he has his mother's ring to give Amy. But Bialik thinks that they aren't ready for that kind of commitment yet.
"Oh heavens, no," she said. "There's still a lot to explore for them about what any kind of further commitment would mean, either with intimacy or romance."
Molaro understands that fans are upset because of the rift between Sheldon and Amy, but he would also like them to focus on other aspects of the show, such as Sheldon and Leonard's work.
"I would like to get back to some of the science collaboration between Sheldon and Leonard and that paper and the blowback and success they were having from that," Molaro said. "I like that relationship and I like that Sheldon and Leonard are essentially married or handcuffed to each other on that paper, and there will be more things about that paper and stemming from the success of that paper later on in the season."
