Some actors prefer not to be cast as villains in order to avoid being portrayed in a negative light, but British actor Tom Hiddleston isn't one of them.

He actually became even more popular after being cast as Thor's meddlesome half brother Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he even managed to make his villain so endearing that fans feel his frustrations and defeat just as much as they root for the lead characters.

For his next film project, the Gothic romance "Crimson Peak" by Guillermo del Toro, Hiddleston once again plays a villain in Sir Thomas Sharpe - a formerly wealthy man with a mysterious past who is up to no good.

Speaking to Screen Rant about his old and new characters, Hiddleston said that he actually enjoys portraying different characters, whether they be good or bad.

"I actually love them all, to be honest. It's a cliche, but it's true. Variety is the spice of life. And when I got into acting, I never wanted to play one type of role. The actors I loved the most growing up were people who could move between genres, between character types. It just happens that Thomas Sharpe in this and Loki are a little bit darker, but... I have played some lighter characters," he said.

When asked if he watched movies that are similar to "Crimson Peak" while growing up, the actor admitted: "I didn't so much, actually. I came to all that stuff a bit later. So my inspirations for this are mostly literary, like Daphne du Maurier 'Rebecca' and 'Jane Eyre' and 'The Mysteries of Udolpho' by Ann Radcliffe. But Guillermo turned me on to all that great Peter Cushing stuff, and John Barrymoore and Christopher Lee and all those great films. I should go back. I should go back and watch."

Naturally, everybody is interested when he will be set to reprise as Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Hiddleston claims to know nothing.

"I mean, I don't know - They haven't (told me anything), so we'll see," he laughingly said. "You know, I genuinely do not know. I wish there was something I could tell you. I haven't spoken to anyone at Marvel for about two years. That universe is expanding at such a rate, so...your guess is as good as mine."

Last time Loki was seen, he was pretending to be Odin and he even managed to fool Thor once again.  "That's all I know that he's been doing," he said. "I mean, I'm interested to see what's happened in the time between. I like to believe that actually he runs Asgard pretty well. The trains run on time and he keeps the streets clean."
