The story of Frankenstein has been told time and again in the big screen, but in James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe's new collaboration "Victor Frankenstein," the story about a mad scientist's brush with life and death is told in a refreshing new way.
One of the most interesting things about "Victor Frankenstein" is how Victor and his assistant Igor's relationship progresses then regresses.
Daniel Radcliffe, best known for his title role in the "Harry Potter" series says his character Igor is greatly indebted to Victor because of the kindness shown to him.
"Igor develops an insane loyalty to Victor," Radcliffe told Screen Rant, because it was Victor who saved the life of acrobat Lorelei (Jessica Brown Findlay) and rescued him from his life as an "abused, mistreated, really ugly creature."
Victor fixes Igor's appearance and elevates his position in society, but James McAvoy, the actor behind Victor said that the scientist does not have a noble or selfless reason for doing all of those things.
"Igor has something that he needs, so he harnesses him," McAvoy explained. "He's a user, Frankenstein is very selfish and personally driven."
McAvoy has a lot of horrible things to say about his character. He also said that Victor has a "massive ego" and a "myriad of personality disorders."
Igor might have thought that Victor helped save his life, but McAvoy believes that it's actually the other way around. "He (Victor) can't really connect with anybody because... all he sees is what he wants and what he wants to get out of it," said McAvoy.
So when he meets Igor, "he suddenly finds somebody who is exceptional and on a par with him... something of Igor gets through to him and they do form a loving relationship."
Towards the end of the film, Igor blindly follows Victor amidst all of his crazy plans and cruelty. Many audiences would wonder why Igor clung to Victor despite all of this, and Radcliffe said that it is pretty important to understand how Igor's mind works.
"Victor saves me, and then creates me, gives me this identity, and a new physical appearance - it engenders that loyalty. In that moment, the finale of the film is set up, you need to establish that loyalty, because he treats me so badly throughout the film, that you would be going, 'Well why are you even bothering with this guy anymore?' And actually it's the fact that Victor at the beginning was the only person who ever saw anything in me enough to try to save me," he explained.
"Viktor Frankenstein" will be released in cinemas on November 25, 2015.
