It is not easy to keep a secret. The latest "Spider-Man" star Tom Holland knows this very well, and this is why he decided to play it safe when it came to the plot details of "Captain America: Civil War," which is the first Marvel film his character will appear in.
"I was only working on it for a week or two weeks or something. So they offered for me to read the script, and I said 'No, I don't want to read it, because I'll be doing all these interviews and I'll end up telling secrets and stuff. I've got such a big mouth.' So I actually don't know what it's about," he told Entertainment Weekly.
What Holland is free to talk about now though is how he landed the highly covetable role, which many young stars such as Asa Butterfield, Charlie Plummer, and Matthew Lintz also auditioned for.
He told the Daily Beast that he called his manager asking him to send a tape for Marvel, but Marvel was already one step ahead since they have already requested a self-tape from him.
"That alone was crazy," says Holland. "I couldn't quite believe that Marvel knew who I was."
He submitted around five revised self-tapes until Marvel was finally satisfied with it. Then, Holland got to audition with two of their biggest stars.
"I did two-one with RDJ, Robert Downey Jr., who was amazing. I couldn't have asked for a cooler guy. And the second test was with Chris Evans, and it was pretty awesome and kind of surreal for me," he said. "We had to do a movement test and then I said, 'Can I just demonstrate some of the things that I can do?' and they all were a little unsure of what I was talking about, and then I did a series of backflips and landed on the X, and was like, 'Thank you!' and then just left."
Funnily enough, Holland found out who Marvel chose for the new role the same way that everybody did - through the internet.
"I was having this terrible day and I went home and was scrolling through Instagram, and I saw Marvel had posted a photo of Spider-Man with the message, 'We have cast the new Spider-Man! Go to our website to see who it is. I learned about it online with everybody else, and I just went bananas," he shared.
