Virtual reality tech company Oculus VR has confirmed that the upcoming Oculus Rift headset will ship out with a free copy of the game "Lucky's Tale" next year.
According to the company, the game's developer Playful specifically designed the game for the VR platform.
"Lucky's Tale" is a platform adventure game that follows the main character Lucky, a fox that looks striking similar to Tails, the sidekick of Sonic the Hedgehog. As noted by Polygon, despite being a VR game, "Lucky's Tale" utilizes a third-person perspective, which means gamers can fully see the main character as he travels across the title's rich environment and solve various kinds of puzzles.
The site also noted that its gameplay is very similar to "Mario 64," or just about any platform game that involves jumping on things, evading obstacles and collecting various items.
Although several games have already been demoed for the VR platform, for Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus VR, "Lucky's Tale" stands out by showing the full gaming potential of the technological concept. This is because many of those titles focused on first-person action games. Playful's game, on the other hand, expands the functionality of the Oculus Rift to accommodate platform games.
"We always believed there was an opportunity for platformers in VR, but it wasn't until playing 'Lucky's Tale' and working with the Playful team that we truly realized its potential to change how people view this genre of gaming forever," he said in a statement in the Oculus VR blog.
"'Lucky's Tale' delivers on everything you want in a next-generation VR game - it's thrilling, full of adventure, and incredibly fun to play," the executive added.
Aside from "Lucky's Tale," the Oculus Rift will also come with "EVE: Valkyrie" for free, according to PC Mag. However, this game will only be available for those who will pre-order the VR headset.
"EVE: Valkyrie" was developed by CCP Games and is a multiplayer shooter set in space. Also designed for Sony's PlayStation VR, the game will let players pilot a spacecraft and engage in cosmic dogfights with their friends.
As for the launch of the Oculus Rift, Oculus VR has not yet provided the exact date as to when the headset will officially come out. But, as noted by the company, it is targeting to release the game sometime during the first quarter of 2016. Currently, Oculus VR is busy working with various studios for the development of new titles for the upcoming VR platform.
