The Syrian civil war between the forces of President Bashar Al Assad, and the rebel groups has entered its 3rd year. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs announced that there are around 9.3 war refugees in Syria, most of them children who are in need of humanitarian aid. A survey by Harris Poll taken on behalf of World Vision showed that around 76 percent of Americans believed that the U.S. should provide some form of assistance for these refugees.
About 40 percent the people who said they were familiar with the Syrian conflict said in the survey that the U.S. should help Syria through humanitarian help. A similar percentage of participants expressed that the best way is to increase diplomatic pressure. Smaller percentages of participants were in favor of either military intervention or other means.
World Vision insiders announced that many Americans are still not very familiar with the Syrian civil war for it was a conflict that was overshadowed by other global issues. Experts expressed that the unfamiliarity was a reason there are still many people who were against any form of U.S. aid or intervention. The people who did not have the knowledge simply couldn't relate the Syrians' situation.
World Vision is currently assisting around 300,000 people in Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan with water and other sanitarian services. They recently released reports written by refugee children, to let the American public know about the physical, and verbal abuse and financial insecurity they have to experience every day.
