For the past few months, flash sales have been the thing in mobile markets in Asia. Some popular Chinese brands such as Xiaomi and Huawei have been holding the flash sales regularly in order to keep the interest of the market.
Meizu, another Chinese brand, has now followed that strategy and it has immediately reaped the rewards.
According to a report by GSM Arena, the Chinese phone manufacturer has just launched its new midranger, the M1, through a flash sale. In the report, the 100,000 units in stock were gone in just one minute.
This is definitely not the first time a smartphone gets sold out in mere minutes, but the Meizu M1 handset is probably one of the fastest-selling of them compared to other handsets that made a similar feat.
In the report, while the traditional 'pre-order' scheme means that customers would only need to sign-up to show their interest for the device, the 100,000 orders for the Meizu M1 were actually paid already. That means the 100k people who ordered would receive the device any time soon.
So why was the Meizu M1 so successful in its first flash sale?
Announced a couple of weeks ago, the device boasts some midrange specs, but there are others which can be considered high-end especially in China. The device packs a 5-inch display with HD (1280 x 720) resolution, 1GB of RAM and a MediaTek MT6732 chipset. Other specs include a quad-core CPU running at 1.5GHz, 8GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot.
For Android fans, the Meizu M1 is still on the updated portion of the market with its Android 4.4.4 Kit Kat OS. However, it was not announced when Android 5.0 Lollipop would arrive. The device also comes with a 2,500mAh battery.
The camera department is where the M1 really shines, and its 13MP primary shooter is considered high-end in most markets. Pair that with a 5MP front snapper and consumers would get a lower-end HTC Desire handset, which costs hundreds of dollars more.
For all of these specs, the Chinese manufacturer only requires CNY 699 or about $111. In the report, no wonder the Chinese market wanted to get its hand on this new Android-powered handset.
In recent years, Meizu has not been as popular as its other Chinese manufacturer neighbors such as Xiaomi, Huawei and Lenovo. However, with the successful launch of the M1 smartphone, the Chinese brand may just be ready to become a threat as well in its home market.
