It is not lost on "Gotham" lead star Ben McKenzie that they made quite a few mistakes in the show's first season, and that is why a lot of viewers stopped watching it halfway through. McKenzie said that they have rectified their mistakes in the second season and hopes that the show's original fans would give their show another shot.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, McKenzie revealed that season two will introduce a lot of new and exciting villains, but they are going to do away with the "procedural element" of the show and therefore make the story arcs much more "serialized."
McKenzie added that he is proud of what they have done so far in the first season, but he is even prouder of season two, which he believes would cater to the fans' tastes.
"I think we made a mistake relatively early on in trying to introduce a villain and take care of that villain in one episode: catch them, send them to Arkham, do whatever," McKenzie said. "That was just a mistake. We should've never done it."
It also did not help that fans had to plow through several mini-hiatuses, after Fox added six more episodes to the show's first season.
"We were ordered for 16 episodes," explained McKenzie. "We were going to have one break and come back and finish the rest of them in terms of the airing, and then we added six more, so we had to break again and then we had to come back again. And it's hard for the audience to follow that many changes in a series in terms of when it's airing and when it's not."
Plus, with several great shows out there, it will be quite easy for audiences to find a replacement for "Gotham," which McKenzie hopes to avoid. "It's challenging right now," he admitted. "There's so much competition out there."
Still, the actor feels good about the direction of "Gotham" season two, and he believes that audiences, even those who quit the show earlier on, would agree.
"The audience really wants to understand who these people are and live with them, sit with them and enjoy them. Whether they're evil or good, they are entertaining. So that's what we're doing in season 2. It's really kick ass. I think it's exactly what the fans want to see," he said.
The second season of "Gotham" will premiere on Monday, September 21 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
