After the considerable success of Disney's "Frozen' in the South Korea box office, the newest animated film from the studio has also soared to the top spot for the weekend last January 30 to February 1. "Big Hero 6' has beaten local films and has climbed to the top of the box office following its second place debut the other week.
The movie was distributed by Walt Disney Company Korea and reached a total overhaul of $12.6 million, accounting for almost 30 percent of overall sales last weekend, as reported by the Korean Film Council KOBIS database.
Similarly, "Frozen' also climbed to the top of the South Korea box office after the film garnered mostly positive reviews, consequently becoming one of the highest-grossing movies in the country's box office history.
Next to "Big Hero 6', "Gangnam Blues' took the second spot and accounted for 20 percent of sales. "Ode to My Father' followed closely in the third spot with 19.9 percent.
"Gangnam Blues' has reportedly generated continuously increasing revenues, which now totals to over $13 million. Additional sales are expected from 13 more Asian countries in which the film was presold.
Thanks to the widely famous TV and movie star Lee Min-Ho, "Gangnam Blues' was able to achieve a successful release in local and foreign territories. It also made a number one spot debut in the local box office last week, prevailing over "Ode to My Father' that has long been dominating the charts in South Korea.
Released by CJ Entertainment, "Ode to My Father' raked in almost $90 million and has become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time within the country. With 12.7 million theater admissions boosting the status of the movie, "Ode to My Father' will be making its global premiere at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival.
With these three films dominating the first three spots in the South Korea box office, romantic drama "Shoot Me in the Heart' from Little Big Pictures and Isu C&E starring Lee Min-Ki and Yeo Jin-Goo has accounted for 7.8 percent of the weekend's sales, taking the number four spot.
CJ Entertainment's romantic comedy "Love Forecast' ranked fifth due with its total gross of $13 million, making up for 5.6 percent of the weekend's sales.
Smaller shares can be attributed to foreign films, such as the "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb' distributed by 20th Century Fox Korea that placed sixth in the local box office with a total gross of $7.12 million (3.7 percent).
Lotte Entertainment's "The Water Diviner' ranked seventh with its 2.8 percent contributed to sales whereas "The Equalizer' from Universal Pictures International Korea and Pancinema's "Big Eyes' directed by Tim Burton raked in 1.8 percent.
