The television series "Bones" went into a huge shift last season when forensic anthropologist Brennan (played by Emily Deschanel) and her FBI agent husband Booth (played by David Boreanaz) decided to quit their jobs and form a fresh start.
However, when season 11 returns, new co-showrunner Michael Peterson told Entertainment Weekly that a new murder mystery will reel the couple back in to doing the jobs they know best.
"The theme that we're exploring is you can't escape fate," explained Peterson. "They're meant to be doing what they're doing, and we're going to embrace that for all of our characters and really get back to the essence of who they are."
Deschanel could not agree more. Even with another baby on the way, she believes that her character and Booth have an obligation to solve murders.
"As much as the death and violence and murder can get to somebody, it really seems like this is kind of their purpose in life," she said.
As a treat to fans, there would even be a two-part crossover between "Bones" and the somewhat supernatural series "Sleepy Hollow" which will air on October 29.
Merging their two worlds doesn't seem to make sense, but Deschanel cannot help but note what a barrel of laughs the special episodes would deliver.
"When I first heard about it, I thought, 'That's an odd choice,' but the more I thought about it, I realized there's a lot of room for humor with Brennan not believing the time travel aspect of that show," Deschanel said.
Peterson added that the episodes would highlight the opposing points of both shows. "Our hour will definitely be explained by science, and theirs will take that much more fantastical point of view," he said, teasing that Brennan would probably be reluctant to accept the idea of the undead.
Despite 11 successful seasons, Peterson believes that "Bones" still has a lot to offer, and they have a lot of material yet to cover. Plus, they have plans on bringing in new characters that will certainly shake up the dynamics of the regular cast.
Peterson revealed that he has long-term goals for the show, and they approached season 11 with the thought that there would be more "Bones" to come in the future.
"John (Collider, co-showrunner) and I are not going to try and wrap up season 11 and be done," said Peterson. "That's not our goal. Our goal is to play forever."
