Freddie Roach does not think the rumored bout between Floyd Mayweather and Amir Khan will happen and the Hall of Fame trainer is also coy on the proposed fight between Manny Pacquiao and Paulie Malignaggi.
Khan, who holds a 31-3 record with 19 knockout victories, scored a unanimous decision win against Chris Algieri in their welterweight fight last week at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
After the fight, Khan called out Mayweather and said that he is willing to face the reigning pound-for-pound king. The Briton also said in an interview with Sky Sports that he thinks he is close to getting a shot against the undefeated world champion in September.
However, Roach thinks otherwise as the Hall of Fame trainer insisted that his former fighter did not do enough to prove that he deserves a shot at Mayweather. The world renowned trainer also questioned if Mayweather is really willing to face Khan, who has been chasing the Grand Rapids native since late 2013.
"Does Mayweather want to take him because he thinks he's an easy fight?" Roach told BoxingScene. "Khan does have fast hands. He throws combinations. He's a good athlete even though he holds a lot and is a little boring. I don't think Mayweather will go near him because no one wants to see that fight."
Khan was considered favorite to land a bout against Mayweather early last year, but the unbeaten welterweight and junior middleweight champion face Marcos Maidana in May and September 2014. The Bolton, England native lobbied for his dream bout again earlier this year, but Mayweather decided to face Manny Pacquiao.
Meanwhile, Roach also gave an update on the condition of Pacquiao. The 55-year-old trainer said Pacquiao is recovering well from the shoulder surgery that repaired a torn right rotator cuff.
Roach, who is a seven-time Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year, also played down talks linking Pacquiao to a fight against Paulie Malignaggi, who recently criticized the Filipino boxing icon for allegedly using his shoulder injury as an excuse after losing to Mayweather.
Roach insisted that they have no plans to face Malignaggi because boxing fans are not interested in the fight despite efforts from the former world champion to get into Pacquiao's nerves.
"Paulie Malignaggi is making a lot of noise. He's trying to get a fight with Pacquiao but I don't think he's going to get one," Roach said. "I don't think there's a public outcry not even here in his hometown of Brooklyn."
