Gennady Golovkin wants to face Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in a title fight if the Mexican boxing superstar emerges victorious against Miguel Cotto in their scheduled showdown.
Alvarez, who holds an impressive 45-1-1 record with 32 knockout victories, will challenge Cotto for the World Boxing Council middleweight title on Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Golovkin told BoxingScene that he is eyeing to unify all middleweight titles. A showdown with Canelo will be ideal for him if the Mexican captures the WBC middleweight crown in November.
But even without a title at stake, Golovkin said that he is very interested in facing Canelo because he believes the 25-year-old former world champion will give him the biggest test of his career.
"Canelo is a very talented boxer, and it was very interesting to work with him in sparring," Golovkin said of Alvarez. "I see him as one of the most probable opponents for a big fight in the future. I think in the near future Canelo will make the full move to the middleweight division and once there everything is possible."
But before thinking of a showdown with Alvarez, Golovkin needs to win against David Lemieux. The undefeated Kazakh will put his International Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association middleweight titles on the line against Lemieux, the reigning International Boxing Federation middleweight titlist, on Oct. 17 in New York.
While he admitted that he is already thinking of future fights, Golovkin insisted that he is focused on his upcoming title unification bout against Lemieux.
The 33-year-old champion, who holds a perfect 33-0 record with 30 of those victories coming by knockout, should have no room for complacency. Lemieux declared that he will go all out because he is determined to pull off an upset, knowing that most boxing analysts are already counting him out.
"I'm going to shock the boxing world," Lemieux said. "They think this fight will be one-sided. But that will not be the case, I can assure you. I cannot wait to put in my performance and open the eyes of everyone. I'm not going in there to box against Golovkin. I'm going in there to fight."
Lemieux, who has racked up 34 wins with 31 stoppage victories against just two defeats since turning professional in 2007, is coming off a unanimous decision win against Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam during their IBF middleweight title fight in June in Montreal, Canada.
