Floyd Mayweather Jr. has already announced his retirement, but he is still continuously being linked to a showdown with unbeaten middleweight Gennady Golovkin.
Most analysts believe Golovkin will have a good chance of handing Mayweather his first defeat. But for Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, Mayweather still has the advantage.
Roach agrees that Golovkin could be too big and too strong for Mayweather because of the disparity in weight. However, the veteran boxing coach is convinced that Mayweather is still too quick and too smart for Golovkin, adding that the former pound-for-pound king has impressive defensive tactics.
"Floyd outboxes him," Roach said via BoxingScene. "Mayweather has never been knocked out as a professional fighter, so what makes this guy any different. He's a good puncher, but I'm sure Floyd has faced a lot of good punchers in his lifetime, from the amateurs to pros. Has Mayweather been down once?"
Mayweather is still firm on his stance that he will not return, but most analysts are still convinced that he will make a comeback to chase his 50th win in as many bouts. But is he willing to take a big risk agianst Golovkin, who has a 34-0 record with 31 knockout wins?
Andy Lee Wants Shot Against Golovkin
Meanwhile, Andy Lee is also eyeing a showdown with Golovkin and the reigning World Boxing Organization middleweight champion is convinced that he has what it takes to beat the undefeated Kazakh.
Lee, who holds a 34-2-1 record with 24 knockout victories, said that he is the only fighter who can give Golovkin a run for his money because he can match up in terms of size and power.
"I believe I am the only one who can give him a serious challenge out there," Lee told Sky Sports. "I have the size, the punch and the boxing ring craft. I don't think I've ever seen anyone push him back or bully him like he does to his opponents. And for me, you have to give him bit of that, not tense up or tighten up under the pressure he puts."
But before thinking of a showdown with Golovkin, Lee has to prove that he deserves a shot against Triple G. He knows that he needs to successfully defend his WBO middleweight crown against Billy Joe Saunders in Manchester on Saturday, which will be his first title defense since capturing the title a year ago.
