Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya is confident that the proposed fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Miguel Cotto will happen next year.
De La Hoya said that he sees no reason why the fight won't be staged next year, saying that Alvarez and Cotto are willing to face each other, unlike the other two fighters who are also being linked to each other, referring to Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"It's a matter of ironing out details, but in my opinion, nothing can put a stop to this fight, because the most important thing is that both guys want to fight each other," De La Hoya told Dan Rafael of ESPN. "Nobody is scared here."
De La Hoya, who revealed that Alvarez will fight on May 2, also admitted that he has already talked to Cotto's adviser Gaby PeñagarÃcano and Top Rank Promotions president Todd duBoef.
The former boxing superstar said that he will talk to Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum soon, and he is confident that the two camps will eventually find a common ground.
"Since Bob is the guy at the helm I'm going to give Bob a call," De La Hoya added. "This is the type of fight that can get made easier than most, certainly easier than Pacquiao-Mayweather. The reason I say that is because both guys want to fight."
Contrary to previous reports, De La Hoya is also confident that fight purse split will not be issue. He is confident that both fighters will agree to a 50-50 split, knowing that they will get the biggest paycheck of their respective careers if they agree to face each other.
"Miguel Cotto is not going to let this fight fall through because they are not happy with the money, and Canelo is not calling off a fight because of the money," De La Hoya said. "They will make the biggest purses of their careers fighting each other."
As for who will enter the ring last, De La Hoya insisted that they will allow Cotto to walk into the ring second because the 34-year-old deserves that kind of treatment, considering the fact that he is the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion.
