Gennady Golovkin wants to face Miguel Cotto in a title unification bout later this year, but promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions is unsure if the Puerto Rican is willing to face Triple G.
Golovkin, who holds a perfect 32-0 record with 29 knockout victories, is scheduled to defend his World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization middleweight titles against Willie Monroe on May 16 in California.
If he successfully defends his title against Monroe, Golovkin made it no secret that he will focus on securing a fight against Cotto, the reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion.
However, Loeffler said in an interview with BoxingScene that he is unsure if the fight could be finalized this year. The K2 promoter said they tried to reach out to Cotto, but his camp did not respond. Cotto will reportedly make his first title defense on June 6, but Loeffler is unsure if the WBC champion will defend his title against Golovkin if he wins.
"It's hard to say," Loeffler said of arranging a fight between Cotto and Golovkin. "I don't have a good feeling with Cotto because we reached out to him for this fight in June and we really got no response. They are going to fight on June 6th and what they are going to do afterwards."
Loeffler also added that WBC already mandated Cotto to defend his title against Golovkin if he wins in his scheduled fight on June 6. Cotto could be stripped off his title if he decides not to face Golovkin, but he quickly pointed out that the mandate might not be enough to convince the 34-year-old champion to face GGG.
Loeffler said that they will reach out to Cotto's camp again and try to strike a deal that would be in favor of the Caguas, Puerto Rico native as they are confident the showdown between the two middleweight superstars will be a huge one especially if it will be staged at Madison Square Garden in New York.
"Whatever deal we work out with Cotto, would be in Cotto's favor," Loeffler said. "If him and Cotto fought at Madison Square Garden, it would be a huge fight. It would be completely sold out. Based on what he drew last year against Geale, it would be a great promotion. It would be structured in a way that it would make financial sense for Cotto."
Cotto, who has a 39-4 record with 32 knockouts, won the WBC middleweight title during his showdown with Sergio Martinez in June last year.
